What are the differences between XPE foam and PE foam?
There are many types of foam products available in the Vietnamese foam industry. Among them, PE is one of the most well-known products and has been widely used for decades.
In addition to PE, there are several alternative materials, such as air bubble foam used in the packaging industry, and PE laminated with OPP film for sound and thermal insulation applications in construction.
Furthermore, PE foam can be combined with various materials to create enhanced products with more comprehensive performance and wider applications.
However, XPE foam is relatively unfamiliar in the Vietnamese market. There are only a few manufacturers producing this type of foam because its market demand and popularity in Vietnam are still limited.
But do you know what XPE is and what advantages it offers? Why have relatively few Vietnamese manufacturers invested in producing it despite its unique properties?

What is XPE Foam?
XPE foam, also known as “Artilon,” is a type of cross-linked polyethylene (PE) foam.
Through the cross-linking process, the foam achieves improved mechanical strength, elasticity, durability, thermal insulation, and impact resistance compared to conventional PE.

How Is XPE Different from PE?
To understand the differences between XPE and PE, it is important to look at their foam structures and manufacturing processes.
Why Are There Not Many XPE Manufacturers in Vietnam?
PE production typically requires:
- Plastic extrusion and foaming only
- A relatively simple production line
- Lower investment costs
XPE production requires additional processes:
- Cross-linking treatment
- Strict control of temperature, pressure, and chemical reactions
- Uniform closed-cell foam structure
As a result, XPE foam is more expensive than PE foam, which remains one of the most popular foam products in the Vietnamese market.
The main reason is that PE is primarily used in Vietnam for:
- Packaging
- Cushioning layers
- Scratch protection
- General-purpose applications
In contrast, XPE foam is designed for more demanding applications such as:
- Construction
- Sports equipment
- Automotive industries
- Higher-end industrial products
This technology has only recently started gaining traction in the Vietnamese market.
Market Reality
However, there is another challenge. Compared with products manufactured in Vietnam, Chinese-made XPE products often have lower production costs and are easier to source.
Therefore, relatively few companies in Vietnam invest in large-scale XPE foam manufacturing. Instead, many businesses prefer to import XPE products from China and focus on processing, converting, or trading them rather than producing the material themselves.
